Alan Moore’s The Show offers a first look at the gothic movie

Comic book legend Alan Moore (Watchmen, Swamp Thing) has typically distanced himself (often angrily) from big-screen adaptations of his work. Now, he’s written the script for a movie of his own, The Show, which will continue the stories he started telling in 2014’s short film series Show Pieces. Earlier today Deadline, revealed the first image from the film which will air exclusively on Shudder. It features a man — who looks a bit like Moore himself — playing ukulele on a crescent moon-like chair.

The principal cast has also been named, which includes Tom Burke (Only God Forgives), Siobhan Hewlett (Redemption), Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals), Sheila Atim (Girl From The North Country), Richard Dillane (The White Princess) and even Moore himself. Moore’s screenplay is the first not to be based on one of his graphic novels. Show Pieces director Mitch Jenkins is helming the new project.

I wanted to apply the storytelling ability accumulated during the rest of my varied career to the medium of film.  I wanted to see if it was possible to create an immersive and addictive world with no throwaway dialogue and no throwaway characters, a world where every character is memorable, distinctive and attempting to steal the whole show for themselves, just as we do in real life. I wanted to take some very old-school approaches to film and to find out, alongside Mitch Jenkins, what would happen if you connected them up with some very modern ideas and technical capabilities, and I wanted to make a piece of radical and progressive cinema that was also ridiculously sumptuous, involving and entertaining: a genuinely spectacular show,” said Moore about his latest creative endeavor.

Production is currently underway in the film’s setting of Northampton, UK, and promises create a tapestry of madness, malevolence and murderous misdeeds, intersecting to form an original, occult noir thriller.

The soundtrack to The Show features original lyrics by Moore set to music by Adam Drucker and Andrew Broder working as Crook & Flail with help from a cast of vocalists including Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio), Alan Sparhawk (Low) and Nona Invie (Dark Dark Dark).
