There’s a True Blood musical in the works according to creator Alan Ball

It’s been 10 years since the moody vampire drama True Blood premiered on HBO. Since then, the show ran for seven seasons, concluding in 2014 with the episode “Thank You.” Now, it seems that the story’s being resurrected for the stage — as a musical. Show creator Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his reflections on the show, when the musical came up in conversation.

They’re workshopping a True Blood musical. I’ve heard all the music and it’s actually pretty good,” said Ball, who included some details about the plot. “It tells the story of vampires coming out of the closet and this love story and then ultimately it [diverts] from the book series … and they end up going back into the closet.

There aren’t any more details available at this point, but it does seem like the cast of brooding, depressed vampires could lend itself to a stage show rather effortlessly. If it has Ball’s endorsement, it might actually see the light of day.

The series, based on the bestselling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, was a mixture of romance, suspense, mystery and humor, taking place in a world where vampires and humans co-exist. Specifically, after vampires were allowed to come out of the coffin, thanks to the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood that means they no longer need humans as a nutritional source. It followed waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and vampire Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard). In addition, it featured an assorted cast of both regular mortals and supernatural beings in small-town Louisiana.
