The Time Machine adaptation being developed by Andy Muschietti
H.G. Wells’ classic tale of time travel is getting another big-screen adaptation, courtesy of Andy Muschietti and Leonardo DiCaprio. According to The Hollywood Reporter, DiCaprio will be producing a new version of The Time Machine via Appian Way with his partner Jennifer Davisson. Muschietti (IT, IT: Chapter Two) will direct the feature, as well as produce alongside his sister, Barbara Muschietti.
Both Warner Bros. and Paramount will be joining forces to develop the project.
The story, written back in 1895, follows an inventor who travels more than 800,000 years in the future to see what humanity has become. He eventually goes further into the future to see the end of life on our planet, before returning back to his late-19th century home. It marked the creation of the term “time machine” and one of the first to tackle the subject matter.
There have been numerous TV movies, radio teleplays, and comic book adaptations of The Time Machine, and this will mark the third feature film. The first was from director George Pal back in 1960. More recently, Guy Pearce starred in a version back in 2002, directed by Simon Wells’, the author’s great-grandson.
Muschietti is currently in post-production on IT: Chapter Two. The next installment, featuring a grown-up Loser’s Club, hits theaters September 9, 2019. It was also recently announced the director will helm a live-action adaptation of the anima classic Attack on Titan.
DiCaprio, meanwhile, is re-teaming with director and frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese for The Killers of the Flower Moon, a mystery set during the oil boom of the 1920s.
