Bryan Singer in negotiations to direct Red Sonja adaptation

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Bryan Singer (Bohemian Rhapsody, X-Men: Apocalypse) is in talks to direct the Red Sonja feature film for Millennium Films, who are producing and financing the project.

Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery character and the comics were created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973.

Ashley Edward Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor, Big Trouble in Little China) is writing the script. The Red Sonja comics are still being published today through Dynamite Entertainment. The film was put into fast-track development by Avi Lerner after the success of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman. Joe Gatta will oversee the project for Millennium, which is financing and producing the project, along with Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon of Cinelou, Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman, and Luke Lieberman, the rights holder of Red Sonja.

Singer has faced scrutiny after being fired by Fox after unexplained absences from the set of Bohemian Rhapsody (though he is still getting a directing credit on the Queen biopic), and more importantly after being sued by Cesar Sanchez-Guzman, who accused Singer of raping him when he was 17 in 2003. The outlet notes that Millennium is willing to “pay Singer top dollar” to helm the project.
