Disenchantment season 1 episode 1 recap
Disenchantment is the new Netflix original series from Matt Groening, the creator of both The Simpsons and Futurama. Join me as I recap all 10 episodes of its first season, starting with the pilot ‘A Princess, an Elf, and a Demon Walk Into a Bar.’
Wedding Bell Blues
Princess Bean of the Kingdom of Dreamland, was slated to marry Prince Guysbert in order to secure a political alliance between their two kingdoms. However, Bean was not very happy about this. Bean escaped from the palace the night before her wedding in order to play poker in the local tavern. She cheated to win, which angered the other bar patrons and resulted in a big brawl breaking out. Cleverly, Bean threw her winnings on the ground of the tavern, which distracted all of the patrons and allowed her to escape.
The next day, Bean returned to her palace and was required to change into her wedding dress. Later, while surveying the reception area, Bean noticed a peculiar looking gift. She was tempted by a voice coming from inside the box to open it. She did so and was greeted by her new personal demon, Luci, who will now antagonize her for all eternity. Luci attempted to explain the nature of his presence, which was to make Bean feel good about doing bad things. This resulted in her redecorating her wedding cake, which her father, King Zog, had made to be purely about the political alliance, into a message about how much she hated her father.
At Bean’s wedding, she refused to marry the prince, which caused him to drop the ring in surprise and stab himself through the head on the throne.
The Lone Elf
Next, we met the group of elves who lived in their kingdom known as Elfwood. All of the elves were happy, except for one elf in particular, named Elfo. He was unhappy with his job and wished to go somewhere else. Later that night, Elfo was sentenced to be hung. The next day, the execution was disrupted and Elfo escaped to a giant gate that functioned as the border between Elfwood and the outside world. Elfo was accosted by the leader of the elf group before he decided to open the gate and leave Elfwood.
While he was wandering through the forest, Elfo was picked up off the ground by a hawk. After boring the hawk, he was dropped into the middle of a great battle between gnomes and trolls. The battle ended with all members of both groups dead except for one lone troll. Elfo managed to stab that troll in the eye, rendering the troll completely blind. Elfo promptly made his escape from the battlefield.
Here We Are At The Crossroads
Elfo finally arrived in Dreamland, and stumbled right into Bean’s wedding. King Zog immediately ordered Elfo to be seized as elves are known to have great magical properties. During the ruckus; Bean, Elfo, and Luci escaped from the wedding together. King Zog ordered a group of knights to track the group down and bring them back to the castle so that Bean could marry Guysbert’s brother, Markimer. He also wanted Elfo to be used for some magical purpose.
Bean and company escaped into the forest and evaded a group of knights tracking them by climbing up a tree. While in the branches of the tree, the group met a fairy. They asked for her help and she told them about the Wishmaster. Promptly, the group set off to find the Wishmaster, and they finally stumbled a mansion occupied by the Washmaster. The knights barged in and attempted to capture the group, but they were foiled by the blinded troll. Bean, Elfo and Luci jumped off the cliff, to their presumed deaths.
