Get ready Star Wars fans. Lucasfilm announced the cast and filming start date for the next, and final chapter, of the Skywalker saga. Yes, Star Wars: Episode IX will be the final film with the Skywalkers. A Skywalker may appear as a cameo in future episodes, but it looks as if this is definitely the last Skywalker film. It’s not surprising, though. Carrie Fisher sadly passed away in real life and Luke Skywalker died at the end of The Last Jedi.
That’s not stopping them from including the Skywalker siblings in Episode IX though. Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams will be reprising their roles in Episode IX. In addition, Carrie Fisher will also return as General Leia too. According to the announcement, Abrams will be using unused footage from Episode VII. This will give fans a “satisfying conclusion” to Leia’s story.
“We were never going to recast, or use a CG character,” says Abrams. “With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”
In addition to the legacy characters, the cast of the new trilogy will be returning too. Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac are all returning. In addition, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd are returning too.
Finally, there will be three new actors joining the cast. They are Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell. Not surprising but they didn’t reveal who they will be playing.
Filming will begin on August 1st at London’s Pinewood Studios. J.J. Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio and will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Michelle Rejwan.
Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
