Heathers scrapped as Paramount Network searches for buyers
In February, just a week prior to its March 7 premiere date, Paramount Network delayed the TV reboot of Heathers indefinitely out of respect for the victims of the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will now no longer see the light of day on any Viacom-owned network as they company is currently searching for a new network to buy the anthology, which was already renewed for a second season before the decision to sell the show. Word had it the second season would feature the same cast in the court of Marie Antoinette in the 1700’s.
“This is a high school show, we’re blowing up the school, there are guns in the school, it’s a satire and there are moments of teachers having guns. It’s hitting on so many hot topics. This company can’t be speaking out of both sides of its mouth, saying the youth movement is important for us and we’ve done all these wonderful things to support that and at the same time, we’re putting on a show that we’re not comfortable with,” said Keith Cox, Paramount Network president of development and production.
Heathers is an upcoming series reboot of the cult classic 1988 film of the same name. The show stars Grace Victoria Cox as Veronica Sawyer, James Scully as JD, Melanie Field as Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell as Heather Duke, and Jasmine Mathews as Heather McNamara. Original film cast member Shannen Doherty will appear, as well as Selma Blair.
Based on the 1988 cult classic film of the same name, Heathers is an hour-long pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day, as heroine Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox, Under the Dome) deals with a very different but equally vicious group of ‘Heathers.’
