Alex Aja tapped for alligator horror movie Crawl at Paramount

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Paramount has tapped filmmaker Alexandre Aja to direct Crawl, described as a self-contained (and low budget) thriller.

THR notes the film’s script centers on a young woman who, while struggling to save her father during a Category 5 hurricane, finds herself trapped inside a flooding house, fighting for her life against Florida’s most savage and feared predators (an alligator). Brothers Shawn and Michael Rasmussen (The Ward) penned the original draft of the script which has since been re-written by Aja.

For Crawl, Aja will team-up with Sam Raimi of Evil Dead and Spider-Man fame who will produce the film with Craig Flores (300: Rise of an Empire). Aja’s credits include a variety of horror films including High Tension, Mirrors, Piranha 3D, Horns, and the remake of The Hills Have Eyes.

Crawl marks a deliberate move by the studio to aim for a lower-budgeted horror movie, hoping for more box office success like their recent release, A Quiet Place. Directed by and starring John Krasinski, the film was produced for just $17 million and has since grossed over $236 million at the global box office and is Paramount’s highest grossing domestic release since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
