Paramount signs S.J. Clarkson as first female director in Star Trek history
Following various development announcements for the big-screen franchise, Paramount has announced a big step forward for the Star Trek reboot series with the hiring of S.J. Clarkson to direct a fourth installment, according to Variety.
The franchise’s future has been in question in the two years following its previous entry, Star Trek Beyond, as two key actors, Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy, passed away, while producer and former director J.J. Abrams had announced that a fourth installment would be produced and news that Quentin Tarantino was tapped to write a script for a film and direct, if possible, sent waves through the industry.
After a few months of doubt from fans, Paramount came out at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas with the news that not only was a fourth film closer to filming than previously expected, but that Clarkson would make history as the first female director of the film franchise.
The film will mark Clarkson’s first return to the filmmaking world in almost ten years after working exclusively in the TV industry on hit shows including Heroes, Dexter, Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Written by J.D. Payne (Godzilla vs. Kong) and Patrick McKay (Beyond), the upcoming sequel will reportedly follow Kirk as he encounters his father in a time travel incident, with Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok) set to reprise his role from the 2009 reboot.
While this entry will undergo production first, Paramount has confirmed that they are still developing the Tarantino entry into the franchise for a future installment.
