How the Guardians of the Galaxy fit into Infinity War

We’ve known for a long, long time now that the Guardians of the Galaxy would team up with The Avengers in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, but that doesn’t mean fans didn’t nearly explode when the team appeared at the end of the teaser trailer.

Speaking on the set of the upcoming film, directors Anthony and Joe Russo talked about how the outer space band of misfits will fit into the film and why the tone of the Guardians movies specifically was something they had to wrestle with as far as integrating it with all of the other characters.

“We have to find a way to bring those tones and honor them,” Joe said. “But also make them work with what we’re doing with the movie. Again, I think the way that we find the best way to do that is to filter these things through our very personal expression of them as characters, it’s not dissimilar to what we did with ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ there is a movement of the characters towards a more ‘Russo brothers’ execution.”

There’s also the fact that in the continuity of the two Guardians of the Galaxy films, they take place within six months of each other and around 2014, while Avengers: Infinity War is set around the time of its release in 2018. That makes for four years worth of Guardians adventures that aren’t seen, and changes to the heroes.

“There are some changes,” Anthony quips.

Joe tacks on to that the little factoid that Groot has grown, and is now “Teen Groot” as we saw in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 post-credit scene.

“But I think changes are about chemistry and about camaraderie and the fact that they’re closer, and they’re tighter, and they’ve been doing it for a while,” Anthony adds. “That’s, if there’s any change, it’s in that when they may or may not intersect with the Avengers in this movie, they have cemented their chemistry as a team.”

Joe adds another fact, “The relationships have deepened.”

And Anthony offers a closing thought about them “And they would stand in contrast with the other teams. Potentially.”

Given the personal nature that Gamora and Nebula both have with Josh Brolin’s Thanos, it stands to reason they might have a more emotional reaction to his collection of the Infinity Stones, and the path of destruction he leaves behind him.

Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters on April 27.
