One of the best escape rooms we’ve tried in San Diego was ‘The Escape’ at Unlockables, so when they invited us to try out their new room, ‘Sister’s Secret’, we knew we would be in for a treat.
In ‘Sister’s Secret’ your group is part of a paranormal team that’s tasked with investigating a house where neighbors are saying they’ve witnessed some flashing lights and unexplained sounds coming from it. But there’s a catch. Your team is not the first one to investigate the house. In Fact, you’re actually the third team to investigate. The previous two teams that went in made it only 60 minutes before they mysteriously disappeared.
The house was owned by two loving sisters who were inseparable. They did everything together, but when one of the sisters suddenly died, the other sister fell into a deep and dark depression, forever haunted by the fact that her sister was no longer with her. Now it’s up to you and your team to find out what happened to two previous teams and discover the secret behind the sisters’ house.
When we attempted Unlockables ‘The Escape’, we were amazed at how well they designed the room. It was vast and intricate and they even snuck in some pop-culture references that you had to find. When it came to the ‘Sister’s Secret,’ Unlockables didn’t skimp on the design. The room is not that big and things can get a little cramp for a team of six. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in the creative design. It’s eerie and creepy design does a wonderful job of backing up the suspenseful, horror-driven theme. Now you’re not going to walk into a room that’s riddled with cobwebs and decrepit furniture that most horror-themed rooms would give you. Instead, you get a room that’s dark, moody and that echoes of eerie and mysterious sounds.
Aside from the design, the real bread and butter of ‘Sister’s Secret’ are the puzzles. When you walk in, you’ll quickly realize that there’s a lot of puzzles. Even for a team of six, there was a lot to do. Within a few minutes of the game starting, we had to step back and reassess the number of puzzles that were in the room and how we were going to go about solving all of them. After successfully escaping the room, I would say that overall there weren’t any puzzles that were downright difficult. Yes, there might have been a puzzle or two that threw us for a loop, but in the end, there wasn’t really anything that made us step back and scratch our heads in confusement and really ask for a hint.
The Unlockables owner, Edwin Tactay, has done 200 escape rooms himself, and after doing that many rooms, you can tell that he has a compiled a list of dos and don’ts to what makes a great escape room. Sister’s Secret delivers a room that’s not only fun and challenging, but also creates a sense of tension. The puzzles bring a nice combination of practical ingenuity and modern day technology that can challenge even the most seasoned players. And just like Unlockables previous room, this one has a few pop-culture Easter eggs that you can find.
