Black Panther dominates over newcomers Red Sparrow and Death Wish

Marvel Studios‘ Black Panther dominated a third straight weekend at the global box office, grossing $65.7 million domestically and $56.2 million internationally. The juggernaut has now pulled in $501.1 million in North America and $396.6 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $897.7 million. Black Panther has crossed the $500 million mark domestically in just 17 days, which is a tie for third-fasted ever, and it is already the 10th-biggest film domestically ever. The film is about to cross the $900 million mark globally as well and will be the fifth Marvel Cinematic Universe film to do so, and it is also crossing the $400 million mark internationally while not yet playing in China (it opens there next weekend).

The international highlights so far include: UK ($49.1M); Korea ($41.4M); Brazil ($24.9M); Australia ($22.3M); Mexico ($22.0M); France ($21.4M); Germany ($14.9M); Russia ($12.9M); Taiwan ($11.9M); Indonesia ($11.3M); Malaysia ($9.4M); India ($9.1M); Philippines ($8.6M); Thailand ($7.9M); Hong Kong ($7.9M); Italy ($7.5M); and Spain ($7.3M).

The Ryan Coogler-directed film stars Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.

Opening in second place domestically was 20th Century Fox’s Red Sparrow, directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling and Jeremy Irons. Made for $69 million, the espionage thriller debuted with $17 million from 3,056 theaters, an average of $5,563 per location. Red Sparrow received a B CinemaScore from audiences.

MGM’s Death Wish remake debuted in the third spot with $13 million from 2,847 theaters, an average of $4,575. Receiving a B+ CinemaScore, the $30 million-budgeted film was directed by Eli Roth and stars Bruce Willis, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elisabeth Shue, Camila Morrone, Dean Norris, and Kimberly Elise.

Dropping two spots to fourth (but only 37% in ticket sales), Warner Bros.’ Game Night added $10.7 million its second weekend for a domestic total of $33.5 million. Internationally, the action comedy earned $8.4 million this weekend from 46 markets to take its overseas total to $16 million. Costing $37 million to make, Game Night was directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The film stars Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, Jesse Plemons, Danny Huston, Chelsea Peretti, Michael C. Hall, and Kyle Chandler.

Sony Pictures Animation’s Peter Rabbit rounded out the top five with $10 million and has grossed $84 million after four weeks. The film opened in China this weekend with $12.7 million and grossed $14.3 million in 12 markets total. The international total now stands at $17.8 million and worldwide sum at $101.9 million. Made for $50 million, the Will Gluck-directed film stars James Corden, Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson, Sam Neill, Daisy Ridley, Elizabeth Debicki, and Margot Robbie.

Alex Garland’s Annihilation (Paramount Pictures) dropped to sixth place with $5.7 million, for a two-week total of $20.6 million. Costing $40 million to make, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Tuva Novotny.

Also, Sony Pictures’ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle added $4.5 million domestically its 11th week in theaters. The film has now earned $393 million in North America. Internationally, Jumanji collected $1.9 million this weekend to lift its overseas total to $535.7 million and worldwide total to $928.9 million. Directed by Jake Kasdan, the $90 million-budgeted film stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale.
