The Big Sick writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon developing Little America for Apple

Husband-and-wife duo Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, the Oscar-nominated screenwriters for the indie hit The Big Sick as well as producers from Master of None and SMILF, are developing Little America, an immigration-themed anthology series for Apple, Deadline announced.

The show is based on the true stories featured in Epic Magazine, described as “a small, collective portrait of America’s immigrants — and thereby a portrait of America itself.” Little America will “go beyond the headlines” in order to view the funny, romantic, heartfelt, inspiring, and unexpected lives of immigrants in America, when their stories are more relevant than ever.

Little America is a half-hour anthology series written by SMILF executive producer Lee Eisenberg, who will serve as the showrunner, and Nanjiani and Gordon. Eisenberg will executive produce the series, with Joshuah Bearman and Joshua Davis acting as executive producers for Epic Magazine alongside co-EP Arthur Spector.

Apple currently has a slate of straight-to-series orders, like Little America, as well as other projects that are being developed for straight-to-series consideration. Other straight-to-series orders include Are You Sleeping starring Octavia Spencer, a morning show drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, an Amazing Stories reboot from Steven Spielberg, a Ronald D. Moore space drama, a Damien Chazelle series, a comedy starring Kristin Wiig, a world-building drama titled See from Steven Knight and Francis Lawrence, as well as docuseries Home from Matt Tyrnauer and Matthew Weaver.
