Jumanji 3 enlists writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker

Following the runaway success of last year’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which is still standing tall at the box office more than a month after release, Sony is gearing up for another entry in the franchise. Deadline reports that writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner have been tapped to pen the script for the next film in the series which will see the return of stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan. The ensemble took on the roles of video game avatars in the sequel, playing hosts to unsuspecting teenagers that were trapped in the game. The sequel could try to make things new again by having them be the avatars of different characters in the game, or taking a page from the original film and text and have the avatars appear in the real world.

Rosenberg and Pinker previously re-wrote the script for Welcome to the Jungle, which was first written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The pair also wrote Sony’s upcoming Venom feature film, with Rosenberg’s other credits including Con Air and Gone in Sixty Seconds and Pinker penning The Dark Tower and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Bad Teacher and Sex Tape helmer Jake Kasdan directed the sequel, though it remains to be seen if he will return for the third film.

To date, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has brought in $857 million worldwide, over triple the worldwide gross of the original film from 1995. Sony motion pictures chief Tom Rothman spoke earlier this year about a sequel to Welcome to the Jungle, saying he’s eager to take on Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019.

Based on the children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg, the original Jumanji starred the late Robin Williams and was directed by Joe Johnston.
