Joss Whedon no longer directing ‘Batgirl’ project

In this comic book movie-filled world, we are at the mercy of creators and collaborators that pour out project after project. DC has been working tirelessly to establish a substantial foundation for their cinematic universe, and with only five films in their roster, it’s been an uphill battle. No we have word that that incline has gotten steeper.

Longtime collaborator of Marvel, Joss Whedon had announced last March that he was changing teams and going to work for DC in an effort to add his artistic touch to one of their greatest heroines: Batgirl. Whedon, known for his astounding work in Marvel’s The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Whedon was no stranger to world-building, and would definitely be creating a stronger foundation for at least the Batman mythos. Unfortunately, this was not something that fans could place their bets on. In an announcement this morning via The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon revealed that he would no longer be attached to the aforementioned Batgirl project.

“Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. Referring to DC president Geoff Johns and Warners Picture Group president Toby Emmerich, Whedon added, “I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?”

Many are speculating as to the reasons for his departure from the project, or if his departure also includes his ties with DC, but some are theorizing that a male filmmaker -as opposed to a female filmmaker- may have faced greater public scrutiny having been given the reins to a character who is such a staple in DC comics, as well as female superheroes, all together. Whatever the reasons may be, we are still faced with the issue of another DC film not having a director. Coupled with the issues the company is having with The Flash project, and you can see why many of the executives may be wiping their brows in anxiety over the direction this franchise is finding itself going.

What do you think? Who would be a great choice to direct the Batgirl film? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
