Danger lurks inside A Room with a Clue’s The Doll House escape room

A Room with a Clue

I recently visited Dallas and discovered A Room with a Clue, an escape room establishment located in the Deep Ellum district. As an enthusiast, I had to check it out and was graciously invited to experience one of the rooms called The Doll House. That was perfect since I’m a big fan of horror escape rooms.

The Doll House is great for first-time escape room attendees, and upon entering the room, you will be surrounded by creepy dolls and toys. Just imagine a room belonging to a little girl, except it actually belongs to a deranged man.

“A creaky door reveals a room deep inside a condemned house. A criminal hides here, with only his… friends… to keep him company. Will his heart’s true desire help him leave behind his horrific past? Explore The Doll House, piece together clues, and solve the mystery to escape.”

The room is made for 2 to 6 players, and you will have to solve puzzles in under an hour before it’s too late. (I recommend going in a group of 6.) There are many locks to unlock, and clues will be laid out all over to help you on your journey. For experienced players, there are some inventive puzzles including the use of a slide projector and a telephone with a rotary dial.

With the creepy atmosphere, the math puzzles kind of took me out of the immersion. Then again, I’m not a fan of math problems in an escape room, even if it’s just adding and subtracting. If you’re wondering what generation the room is, it would be more of a first-generation room with lots of simple locks sprinkled throughout. (New generations of escape rooms have featured advanced technology for better immersion.)

My group almost made it out since we were on the last puzzle, but it didn’t matter since we were all trapped in the end. It was a hectic and fun time, especially since we were grouped with strangers. In general, our group would consist of the Nerd Reactor crew, and it would make solving puzzles easier since we knew our strengths and weaknesses. However, partnering up with strangers always brings an extra challenge as you’re getting a feel for your new teammates. It’s exhilarating to see teamwork form with complete strangers, especially if they’re new to escape rooms.

So the next time you’re in the Dallas area, I recommend checking out A Room with a Clue and supporting the Dallas escape room scene. (It’s also next to Pecan Lodge, one of my favorite places for smoked ribs and brisket.)
