More Thor after Avengers 4? Chris Hemsworth teases return

Now that Chris Hemsworth had finished filming this summer’s Avengers: Infinity War and next year’s untitled Avengers 4, he is one of a handful of Marvel Studios vets that has officially run out his contract (7 films plus a cameo in Doctor Strange). However, in a new interview with IGN, Hemsworth teases that he may have a renewed enthusiasm for bringing us more Thor after Avengers 4.

“I’ve just, literally two days ago, finished ‘Avengers 4’ and that’s my contract — my preexisting contract is done now, so it’s kind of like, ‘wow, that’s it,'” Hemsworth said. “Two or three films ago I was like, ‘okay, a couple more.’ I was enjoying it but I was like… I felt a little restricted. And after this last experience with Taika, and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we’ve reinvented the character a number of times — even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don’t get that opportunity often in a franchise. So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.”

While Hemsworth admits there have been no discussions between he and Marvel to negotiate a new deal, it seems like something he might want, which hints that there could be a place for him in the post-Thanos universe. Or, if the God of Thunder should parish in Avengers 4, it’s possible he could still come back in a film like Captain Marvel, which is set in the ’90s, playing a younger Thor (possibly without the beard!).

“If I had the opportunity to do it again, I think I’d love to,” said Hemsworth. “I also think there’s an appetite for it now, or there’s a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we’ve kind of broken the mold a bit.”

Unlike his fellow Avengers like Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth has had a somewhat difficult time outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His starring vehicles like BlackhatIn the Heart of the Sea and The Huntsman: Winter’s War have performed poorly at the box office, and even his praised comedy turns in Vacation and Ghostbusters couldn’t stop those films from disappointing. He has the military drama 12 Strong this month, but it’s possible Hemsworth may want to maintain his Thor presence onscreen a little longer until he can find his groove outside the MCU.

Confirmed cast members for Avengers: Infinity War so far include Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scalett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olson, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Don Cheadle, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Pom Klementieff, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Sean Gunn, Tom Holland, Josh Brolin, and Paul Rudd.

The Avengers sequel sees Earth’s Mightiest Heroes teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on Brolin’s Thanos and his Black Order.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who return after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, are directing both Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled fourth film, which were filmed back-to-back in Atlanta and are written by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Both films were also shot entirely with IMAX cameras.

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is slated for a release in theaters on May 4, 2018. Then, the Avengers assemble again for the still-untitled fourth film, set for May 3, 2019.
