Halo TV series still in development at Showtime
It’s been nearly four years since the last bit of reported news on the Steven Spielberg-produced Halo TV series, but Showtime hasn’t forgotten about the series. Speaking at this year’s TCA (via TV Guide), Showtime President and CEO David Nevins confirmed that the series remains in active development and that Spielberg is still attached to the project.
Gary Levine, president of programming at Showtime, added that Halo “is absolutely still in development, still moving forward and I’m encouraged by what we’ve seen so far… It’s still live action, and it will definitely satisfy the fans of Halo and I think also satisfy the drama audiences of Showtime.”
Halo tells the story of the Master Chief, an enhanced super soldier in the far future who is caught in the middle of war between humanity’s last surviving forces and an alien armada known as The Covenant. When they land on a strange ring structure, called Halo, the war takes a dark turn, releasing an infectious life form called The Flood that destroys, consumes, and mutates all life it encounters.
The Halo video game series kicked off in 2001 as one of the launch titles for the original Xbox and quickly became a standard in the video game industry as the term “Halo Killer” was coined for upcoming games that were expected to be popular, and potentially eclipse the award-winning first person shooter. To date, five games have been released in the core Halo series of games with several other spin-offs released as well. The franchise has sold over 70 million games in its lifetime and brought in over $4 billion.
