Sony Pictures pushes back Alpha and Goosebumps 2

Sony Pictures has pushed back the release dates for both the Ice Age-set drama Alpha and the Goosebumps sequel, according to Deadline.

Alpha, which was scheduled to open in theaters on March 2, 2018, will now come to theaters on September 14, 2018. That’s the same date as 20th Century Fox’s The Darkest Minds and MGM’s Fighting with My Family.

Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men: Apocalypse, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) stars in the film alongside Natassia Malthe (Elektra, This Means War), Leonor Varela (Blade II, Marvel’s Agents of Shield), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of Thrones, Atomic Blonde), Mercedes de la Zerda (War for the Planet of the Apes, Hemlock Grove), and Jens Hultén (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation). The film is directed by Albert Hughes (Menace II Society, The Book of Eli), written by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt and produced by Albert Hughes and Andrew Rona.

The Goosebumps sequel, to be directed by Ari Sandel (The DUFF), will be moving from September 21, 2018 to October 12, 2021. That moves it away from The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which also stars Jack Black. It will now face Lionsgate’s Hellfest and Universal’s First Man, which are also opening on October 12.

The first Goosebumps made $150 million on a $58 million budget, and hit #1 on the sales charts when it was released on home video. Since there are 62 books in the original “Goosebumps” series, the filmmakers will have plenty of material to wade through in order to craft a story.

Based on Scholastic’s worldwide best-selling book series, with over 400 million copies in print, Goosebumps starred Jack Black (School of Rock) as “Goosebumps” author R.L. Stine, along with Dylan Minnette (Prisoners), Ryan Lee (Super 8) and Odeya Rush (The Giver).
