Refinery29’s LA exhibit redefines art and activism with ’29Rooms’

Refinery29’s hit exhibit ‘29Rooms‘ opened in downtown Los Angeles today with art created and inspired by Demi Lovato, Janelle Monae, Emma Roberts, Jill Soloway, the Women’s March, and many other celebrity and brand collaborators. Opened now until December 10th, and December 14th-17th, ticket holders to the sold-out and exclusive exhibit can now view the ‘Turn It Into Art’-themed rooms for the perfect Instagram picture.

Although some rooms are pretty images to share, many rooms had a deeper meaning behind them that reflects the politics and social constructs in today’s society. Soloway’s “Gender Neutral”, in collaboration with artist Xavier Schipani, welcomes visitors to enter a room designed to look like a bathroom and welcomes all genders to enter a bathroom stall and “listen to those who’ve embarked on their own journey across the spectrum of gender, as they share their most intimate moments of self-discovery.”

In Room 14’s ‘NeuroSpeculative AfroFeminism”, created by Hyphen-Labs, have visitors enter what looks to be a hair salon/barber shop and put on a VR headset. According to the description,”In this virtual reality scope, you’re transported to a future of empowerment.”

YouTube star Lilly Singh aka IISuperWomanII, with her GirlLove Initiative, and Paola Delucca created a space with beautiful images of women (designed after Refinery29 employees) and a room where you are encouraged to call a girlfriend and share some love to her. Singh’s room encourages to break the cycle of girl-on-girl hate and spread #GirlLove.

Other collaborators include the Women’s March, which encourages visitors to send postcards featuring the empowerment posters displayed on the walls to members of Congress; Planned Parenthood’s electrifying display of the reproductive system; Lovato’s “Power Parlor”, which allows guests to be airbrushed with the singer’s empowering tattoo; and, Margot Robbie, in association with her new film iTonya, created a display of trophies with flags with empowering messages like “F*ck the Haters” and “I Don’t Apologize For Who I Am”. Adidas, singers Chloe x Halle, Netflix’s The Crown, artist Alexa Meade, Toyota, Urban Decay, poet Cleo Wade, Marc Jacobs, and more also created their own space.

Although the exhibit issold out, fans can check out the limited edition merchandise here. Keep a lookout on social media in case people do need to sell their tickets.
