StarCraft II is now free-to-play

StarCraft II

Blizzard made the announcement during BlizzCon 2017 that StarCraft II is going to be free-to-play. Today is that day, and now new and old players will be able to come back and experience the sci-fi real-time strategy game with a bigger community.

Here’s what you’ll be getting:

· The full Wings of Liberty campaign
· Access to all multiplayer units in Unranked Multiplayer and Custom game modes
· Free access to the Ranked Multiplayer ladder by completing 10 “First Wins of the Day” in Unranked Multiplayer or Versus AI modes
· All Co-op Commanders free up to level 5, including the brand new Terran commander combo Mira Han and Matt Horner, who also debut today.
· Between November 8 and December 8, players who already have Wings of Liberty (as of October 31, 2017) can get a free digital copy of Heart of the Swarm.

“It’s really exciting for us,” David Sum, StarCraft II’s lead co-op designer, tells Nerd Reactor. “We’ve got feedback that it was a little difficult to understand all the different levels of StarCraft. ‘What do you have to do to get in?’ Our community even made a guide about what to do for new players to help their friends out. We don’t want it to be that hard to get into the game. With free-to-play, it means more players to play with, and more opportunities to meet friends and really build our community.”

“Our focus is on the community,” Sum continued. “Games for us at Blizzard isn’t just about games; it’s a lifestyle. It’s about staying connected with the community, building our community, taking feedback and getting the features that they want. On the co-op side, we’ve been getting a lot of feedback about balance and what commanders they want to see next. We even had a community contest for maps, so the community got to build their own maps and enter a contest. We’ve got a ton of submissions for that. The map that’s coming out that we’re releasing here at BlizzCon is a community map that was generated by the community. That’s really our love letter to the community.”
