Michelle Williams in talks to join Venom

Michelle Williams in Oz the Great and Powerful

Hey, Webheads! News has just surfaced around the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film, Venom. Reports have just come out that Sony Pictures is in current talks to bring actress Michelle Williams on as Eddie Brocks ex-wife, Anne Weying. It claims that Williams has been meeting with producers of the film for the last few weeks now and is close to signing a deal co-star with along Tom Hardy in the movie.

Anne Weying is a recurring character in the comics. She once helped Spider-Man find Venom when he was holding his parents hostage. She even eventually convinced Venom to give up his vendetta against the Wall Crawler. Weying even donned the symbiote at one time when she was shot by the Sin Eater. Eddie, knowing that she would die without the aid of the symbiote, commands it to take over Ann, thus She-Venom was born. During her stint in the symbiote, she massacres a gang of drug dealers to help save Eddie. After seeing the pile of bodies left behind in her wake, she left scarred and traumatized by the experience and refuses to see Eddie Brock after it.

No word yet if they will even touch the She-Venom idea for the movie. So far we do know the film is a standalone one-off that will not connect to Marvel or the current Spider-man.

Williams is actually not the only one who has been recently rumored to join Tom Hardy in the film. Emmy Award winner Riz Ahmed has also been in talks to star in the film. Recent rumors suggest that he could be playing the role of the psychopathic serial killer Cletus Kasady, better known as Spider-Man and Venom’s longtime foe, Carnage. Some believe that he will be the film’s main protagonist, which seems really odd.

Venom and Carnage do square off from time to time in the comics, but not having Spider-Man somehow in the mixed just seems like a missed opportunity. As a fan, I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited to see the Maximum Carnage story arc play out on the big screen. During the ’90s, Maximum Carnage was a hugely successful series that got its own video game and was even featured in the ’90s Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Guess this might be as close as we ever get to something remotely close to it.

Venom is slated to hit theaters on October 5, 2018.
