Doctor Who: Meet the Doctor’s new companions

Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor isn’t just getting one companion – she’s getting THREE! BBC has announced the companions for the 13th Doctor – Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill, and Tosin Cole.

Walsh, a former professional footballer and game show host for multiple British shows like The Chase and Wheel of Fortune, was seen briefly in the Doctor Who spin-off Sarah Jane Adventures in 2008. Having been a long time fan of Doctor Who, Walsh tells BBC News, “I remember watching William Hartnell as the first Doctor. Black and white made it very scary for a youngster like myself.”

Gill has worked in film, radio, theatre, and television. Known best for her role in Hollyoaks, Gill is said to be “over the moon” to join Doctor Who. She told the BBC, “Certain roles seem unattainable and this is one of those, so much so I didn’t believe it to be true for the first few weeks.”

As for Cole, the young actor is no stranger to iconic sci-fi franchises. Cole was previously in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a member of the Red Squadron. He tells the BBC, “I’m grateful and excited to be a part of this journey with the team. I’m looking forward to jumping in this Doctor Who universe.”

New showrunner and executive producer Chris Chibnall said of the casting, “The new Doctor is going to need new friends. We’re thrilled to welcome Mandip, Tosin, and Bradley to the Doctor Who family. They’re three of Britain’s brightest talents and we can’t wait to see them dive into brand new adventures with Jodie’s Doctor. Alongside them, we’re delighted that Sharon D Clarke is also joining the show.”

Whittaker, the first female to play The Doctor, will take over the role from Peter Capaldi after this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special. No other details on the casting were revealed other than their first names – Walsh will play Graham, Gill will play Yasmin, and Cole plays a character named Ryan.

This is not the first time the Doctor has had multiple companions. The First Doctor originally had three companions – Susan, Ian, and Barbara. Traditionally, the Doctor has had more than one companion, with the most recent Doctor having two and a half – Bill (Pearl Mackie), Nardole (Matt Lucas), and Missy (Michelle Gomez) being in and out of missions.

Doctor Who returns this Christmas on BBC One and BBC America.
