Apple to produce Amazing Stories reboot with Amblin and Bryan Fuller
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has teamed up with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and NBCUniversal’s television production unit to reboot the hit anthology series Amazing Stories. Hannibal and American Gods creator Bryan Fuller is set to serve as showrunner for the Amazing Stories reboot. 10 episodes in total have been ordered, with each entry said to have a $5 million budget.
“We love being at the forefront of Apple’s investment in scripted programming, and can’t think of a better property than Spielberg’s beloved Amazing Stories franchise with the genius of Bryan Fuller at the helm and more exciting creative partnerships to come,” NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said in a statement.
This announcement comes after Apple recently hired Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht from Sony Television specifically to create original programming for the tech giant. How this original content will be made available to viewers remains to be seen.
Amazing Stories first premiered in September of 1985 fresh off of Spielberg’s success from producing Back to the Future and directing Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The series’ episodes ranged from fantasy-themed to more sci-fi or horror-focused episodes and featured a veritable who’s who of directors behind each episode, including Spielberg himself, plus Bob Clark, Clint Eastwood, Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese, Irvin Kershner, Robert Zemeckis, Danny DeVito, Tom Holland, Brad Bird, Nick Castle, and even Burt Reynolds. The series, despite twelve Emmy nominations and five wins, was cancelled after two seasons.
