Starsky & Hutch TV Reboot Coming From James Gunn

Director James Gunn relied on ’70s rock for the soundtracks to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but now he’s digging deeper into ’70s pop culture for a Starsky & Hutch TV reboot. According to Deadline, Sony Pictures TV Studios is currently pitching the reboot to broadcast, cable and streaming networks, with James Gunn writing alongside his brother Brian and cousin Mark, the latter two of which wrote Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Created by William Blinn, the original Starsky & Hutch show aired on ABC from 1975 to 1979, revolving around detectives David Michael Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and Richard “Hutch” Hutchinson (David Soul) in the fictional Bay City, California.

A movie version directed by Todd Phillips, also titled Starsky & Hutch, was released in 2004 and starred Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as the title duo, but reimagined as a ’70s comedy. The film grossed $170 million worldwide.

The Gunns are set to executive produce Starsky & Hutch as a one-hour procedural alongside Neal Moritz’s Original Film, which produced the movie as well. Sony’s head of TV, Pavun Shetty, is also executive producing. James Gunn could potentially direct the pilot as well should his schedule on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 allow it.

Gunn himself took to Twitter to clarify some of this information…
