Samus is back in a new commercial for Metroid: Samus Returns

As a die-hard Metroid fan, I have waited seven long years for a new addition to my beloved franchise. Now it’s crazy to think that we’ll be getting a new one in just over two weeks with Metroid: Samus Returns. Sure it’s a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus, but now Yoshio Sakamoto (the mastermind behind Super Metroid) and MercurySteam went in and built a new version from the ground up that is night and day compared to the old game on Game Boy.

Recently released is a new commercial for the game featuring an extremely well-rendered model for Samus Aran along with some tidbits of gameplay showcasing her new and old abilities. There is not much in the way of spoilers so you can watch without any fear. However, there was another trailer released during Gamescom last week which featured a brief overview of the game’s mechanics and story. I couldn’t bring myself to watch since I’m trying to go in as blind as possible, but it’s down below in case you’re interested.

Since Metroid has been one of Nintendo’s neglected franchises, it’s easy for people to forget just how important the series is. Other than the fact that Samus Aran is one of the first female protagonists in gaming, the first Metroid on NES was a sci-fi shooter filled with pure atmosphere that no other game could comprehend at the time. Same goes for Super Metroid, which is arguably the best in the series. Metroid Prime then made the series more mainstream, being the best selling title to date. It wasn’t until the poorly-received Metroid: Other M that the series has remained stagnant for the past seven years, and no, Metroid Prime: Federation Force doesn’t count.

Now on September 15, we’re finally getting a new Metroid game, and the first 2D Metroid game in over 13 years: Metroid: Samus Returns.

Will you be dusting off your 3DS to play it? Sound off in the comments!
