Nightwing director Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie) recently opened up about his vision for the DC Extended Universe film. He also speaks about what he wants out of an actor, and that’s to deliver the Nightwing that we all want and deserve. Based on this information, we can now speculate on who should be the actor portraying the best Robin of all, Dick Grayson.
On Twitter, McKay added that the actor would have to love the character. He stated, “He has to. It has to be full commitment.”
He said it’s “going to be grueling from a martial arts, gymnastics, and stunt perspective,” and continued with “also emotionally taxing. It’s going to be real.”
With some help from Boss Logic, who can we expect would be a great actor for pulling off the complex character of Nightwing?
Steven Yeun
Steven Yeun would be my #1 pick for an ethnic twist to Dick Grayson. No, I did not force add any minorities to the list, but he has been a contender mentioned on quite a few list. He can pull the self-doubt that Dick Grayson has constantly shown over the years, trying to live up to his adopted father’s mantle. Also, Steven Yeun no longer has The Walking Dead to worry about when it comes to a filming schedule. And he has shown that he has the acting chops in both live action and voice-over to deliver the character in a way that is deserved.
Zac Efron
Zak Efron is one of those guys that guys loved to hate 10 years ago since he was in High School Musical. Since then he has proven that he can be a serious actor in films like Charlie St. Cloud, That Awkward Moment, and the upcoming The Greatest Showman. He already has the muscle toned body that you would expect from Batman’s protege and has proven he can also be an action star in the recent film Baywatch.
John Boyega
John Boyega is in one of the biggest franchises in history with Star Wars, and I would love to see him jump ship to a superhero role. He has that anger in The Force Awakens and showed he can fight in the film, as well as in Attack the Block. It would be a major move for DC to steal a member of the Disney family. And with guaranteed future success of the Star Wars franchise, we could almost guarantee a successful film assuming John Boyega could pull off the stunt work.
Kit Harrington
Kit Harrington would be a great choice for Dick Grayson coming off his incredibly successful role as John Snow in Game of Thrones. He has the rich pretty boy look down, as well as the long hair that Dick held during his more rebellious years. He also knows what it’s like playing a character with a very complicated and powerful family, like the Starks. Plus wouldn’t you like to see Batman look at him and say, “You know nothing, Dick Grayson”?
Drake Bell
Drake Bell has been pushing and hinting that he wants to be either Tim Drake or Dick Grayson. In recent tweets, he gave some hints that Dick Grayson is the character he is going for, but could that be for the like-action Titans TV show? He has the small boyish look and size that would work for a young sidekick to Batman. He has also voiced Spider-Man for many years, so he has a little bit of superhero experience. But would the fans be okay with him on the big screen? That’s the real question.
Taron Egerton
Taron Egerton starred in the surprising hit Kingsman: The Secret Service and is going back to his role as the lovable spy Eggsy in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. We were able to see his ability to parkour and fight in these films, which would be important to a role like Nightwing. He also is one of the young actors that people look forward to watching. But could he mesh well with Ben Affleck and pull off the role?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Clearly having Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be a great way to pay homage to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight series. At the end of The Dark Knight Rises, we know that John Blake presumably took over the role of Batman, or possibly Nightwing as he was given access to the Batcave and all of Bruce Wayne’s secrets. It would be an easy transition and only take a few lines to explain that Batman came back after 10 years creating a connection between Chris Nolan’s series and the current DC Extended Universe.
