To many, Star Wars: The Force Awakens rejuvenated the iconic franchise. It was praised by critics and audiences and, too many, was a huge step up from the unpopular prequel trilogy. Of course, it led to all kinds of merchandise and even brought Star Wars comics back into the Marvel lineup. Those comics are aimed at an older audience, though. Fortunately, younger kids will have a chance to read about their favorite Star Wars characters. A graphic novel based on the seventh episode will be released and aimed at a younger demographic.
IDW Publishing plans to launch a young reader line of Star Wars comics this fall, called Star Wars Adventures. However, to kick it off, the San Diego-based publisher is producing an 80-page adaptation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens to come out this August.
This will lead into the aforementioned Star Wars Adventures. Furthermore, it will be a monthly series of original material for younger readers. And it starts with a story about the early life of The Force Awakens‘ protagonist Rey. IDW also publishes collections of Star Wars newspaper strips and other archival material related to the franchise.
The Force Awakens graphic novel will be written by Alessandro Ferrari with art by various Disney artists. Their art is intended to ‘bridge the gap’ between Star Wars and traditional Disney animation, making it more appealing to younger readers. This group of artists has previously adapted both the original and prequel trilogies into comic book format.
The Star Wars: The Force Awakens graphic novel is part of Disney’s publishing program called Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Obviously, this is all meant to help promote the eighth installment in the series which will hit theaters on December 15, 2017. As for the seventh installment, you can re-watch it as well as read about it for the ultimate preparation experience.
