Details continue to trickle out about Star Trek: Discovery, the upcoming Star Trek series on CBS All Access. In addition to rounding out its casting with Jason Isaacs, Michelle Yeoh, and Sonequa Martin-Green, the show has also announced the lifting of a pretty significant story restriction for the new series.
Fans of the Star Trek franchise may know that Gene Roddenberry had a guideline that stipulated that Starfleet crew members were not supposed to have any significant conflicts with each other. This was meant to better convey the utopian ethos of Starfleet as a place of high ideals and limited internal strife. Generally, any strife that occurred between characters was between Starfleet and non-Starfleet characters (i.e. the Maquis on Voyager or Bajoran/Cardassian on Deep Space Nine). But it appears that this rule has been lifted for Discovery, giving the show a deep well of dramatic tension between Starfleet crew to mine stories from.
Showrunner Gretchen J. Berg told Entertainment Weekly, “We’re trying to do stories that are complicated, with characters with strong points of view and strong passions,” Harberts said. “People have to make mistakes — mistakes are still going to be made in the future. We’re still going to argue in the future.”
This is a promising new development for the show, which can occasionally come off almost too high-minded, with infallible characters who show limited human flaws. It appears that the new show will explore more conventional human flaws and issues, which could result in some more realistic storytelling. That being said, this is still Star Trek, and the uplifting ideals of what the future of humanity could be like should still be maintained at least to some degree. So long as the optimism of Star Trek can be maintained, a little extra inter-Starfleet conflict could be a welcome new addition to the franchise.
Star Trek: Discovery premieres on September 24.
