Matthew Mercer & Erin Cahill on Resident Evil: Vendetta

Matthew Mercer & Erin Cahill on Resident Evil: Vendetta
Resident Evil: Vendetta is currently available via digital download and will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD on July 18th. We had the chance to chat with Matthew Mercer (Leon S. Kennedy) and Erin Cahill (Rebecca Chambers) about their work on the film.

“Leon is my favorite character in the franchise,” Mercer tells Nerd Reactor. “Any opportunity to step back into his shoes is an absolute joy. This film is no exception because, with each progressive storyline, you get a little more complex, a little darker, a little more browbeaten. A lot of these films have been a love letter to the community that had been around since the first Resident Evil. This one definitely takes the cake. A lot of inspiration from the recent Resident Evil 7 and classic survival horror genre while still blending that with the over-the-top crazy action that you see the franchise embrace so heavily. I’m super excited about it, and I’m sure folks will be enjoying it.”

“I love playing Rebecca,” said Cahill. “I’ve been saying all day it’s a specific joy to bring her back. When she started out she was on the edge of becoming an adult. Now you get to see her as a fully formed woman.”

Leon is an established character in Resident Evil with many different actors portraying him. Mercer talks about what it’s like to continue the mantle when he started as Leon in Resident Evil 6.

“You get a character that’s already been established and a favorite for a lot of people in the fanbase. It’s a lot of pressure as well as it was an honor to step into that space.” Mercer continued, “I took a lot of inspiration and did a lot of research regarding his previous performance so I can make an easy enough transition with mine… to make sure the fans wouldn’t feel like it’s too drastic a change. But also make sure that I leave myself room to not be a copy of an existing performance, but to use that and make it my own.”

For Cahill, it’s a chance to be a part of the Resident Evil franchise with Resident Evil: Vendetta.

“I really hope the fans don’t mind my candor with this one,” said Cahill. “I did not know of Rebecca Chambers until I booked the part. I feel relieved because Matt was under the weight of the expectation of the fandom and of doing the role justice and serving the role. It wasn’t really until after I finished portraying her that I found out who she was. I really went off of gut instinct and being directed.”

You can listen to the full interview below as they discuss Dungeons & Dragons and what it’s like starting out as actors.
