E3 2017: Bloody Zombies is an arcade brawler with a VR twist

Arcade brawlers have been around for decades. It is one of the oldest genres of games, and early on, it reigned supreme above other arcade machines. Games like Double Dragon, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, and TMNT had people flocking to arcades. And while they are not in the limelight like other genres, there is still a very dedicated fanbase that takes their mastery of brawlers to a whole new level. nDreams’ Bloody Zombies is a VR-enhanced 4-player co-op side-scrolling brawler that elicits feelings of nostalgia from back in the day.

The game takes place in London about 6 months after the zombie apocalypse. It has an expandable and upgradeable free-form combat system where players can take down a horde full of creative enemies. The lone survivors will all have the same stats and capabilities to prevent players from being forced to play a character they don’t like.

The VR feature was a really cool augmentation to the formula. A player’s view is not limited to the viewing space due to their teammates. A player could explore to a degree without having to halt the progress because of their allies. The VR also gives players a new camera angle so they can easily find collectibles, hidden paths to upgrades, or detect traps before it’s too late. There is also a combo system that can potentially give bonus stats and passives after reaching certain values. An example was a damage amplifier after reaching 100 hits without taking damage.

I played Bloody Zombies entirely while in VR and used a standard console control pad. (I believe it was the Xbox 360.) And from the moment I put on the headset, the rush of sitting at home with my younger siblings playing Streets of Rage and Golden Axe all came back to me. While Bloody Zombies is very different and much deeper than these classics, it still manages to invoke those strong feelings of nostalgia and has the potential to be a big hit in the arcade brawler world.

Bloody Zombies is coming in 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, PSVR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive.
