Daniel Day-Lewis is done with acting

Three-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis has announced that he is retiring from acting, according to Variety.

Day-Lewis did not reveal his reason, but in a statement released today by Day-Lewis’ spokesperson, Leslee Dart, it confirmed the actor’s retirement. It stated “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

The 60-year-old actor, who has starred in countless award-winning films, has graced our screens for over forty years. Day-Lewis’ final film set to release on December 25th, 2017.  Produced by Annapurna Pictures and Focus Features, the working title of the project is currently called Phantom Thread. In this high fashion drama, Day-Lewis is reunited with There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson. The film is set in the 1950s in London where Day-Lewis will play a fashion designer for the upper-class society. According to Dart, Day-Lewis will still participate in the promotion for the film, which may be an award contender.

This isn’t the actor’s first time dipping into retirement. After the filming of the 1997 drama, The Boxer, Day-Lewis took a leave of absence from acting and moved to Florence, Italy to study the craft of shoemaking. He eventually took an apprenticeship with famed shoemaker Stefano Bemer. After a five year hiatus, the actor eventually returned to the states to film Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, which earned Day-Lewis a second BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

The actor has been praised for his work in drama with three Academy-Awards for his roles in 1989’s My Left Foot, 2007’s There Will Be Blood, and 2012’s Lincoln. In 2014, he was officially given knighthood from the British monarchy for his contribution to the arts for drama.
