Although you’ll recognize quite a few familiar faces in the cast of writer and director Jeff Baena’s The Little Hours, the ensemble isn’t quite like anything you’ve seen before. Hitting theaters in New York and Los Angeles this Friday, the film is based on Giovanni Boccacio’s The Decameron, setting an all-star comedy cast against a medieval backdrop. Jeff Baena, who has also directed comedies like Life After Beth and Joshy, recently joined stars Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Dave Franco, Fred Armisen and Molly Shannon, to explain how The Little Hours came together and why a 700-year old text was fertile ground for a big screen comedy.

The Little Hours follows medieval nuns Alessandra (Brie), Fernanda (Plaza), and Ginevra (Kate Micucci), who lead a simple life in their convent. Their days are spent chafing at monastic routine, spying on one another, and berating the estate’s day laborer. After a particularly vicious insult session drives the peasant away, Father Tommasso (John C. Reilly) brings on new hired hand Massetto (Franco), a virile young servant forced into hiding by his angry lord. Introduced to the sisters as a deaf-mute to discourage temptation, Massetto struggles to maintain his cover as the repressed nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse, and wicked revelry.

The Little Hours cast also includes Jemima Kirke, Nick Offerman, Adam Pally, Jon Gabrus and Lauren Weedman.
