Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn unleashes a slew of sleazy Florida-set thrillers and horror films next month
The Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn announced today their sweltering new series FLORIDA BAD, a limited screening event featuring eight tawdry films set in the stifling, stinking heat of the Sunshine State. The series will run from July 10th to 27th, with a special Florida-inspired food and beverage menu available at all screenings.
The cinematic portrayal of Florida is ripe with a special breed of miscreant – seductive deceivers, murderous sociopaths, dildo-wielding bodybuilders – in movies that drip with sweat and blood from people who have spent too much time in the sun. Florida Bad includes some of the Alamo’s favorite Florida-set crime movies, spanning decades from the gory spectacle of H.G.Lewis’s notorious gore fave Blood Feast to the ripped-from-the-headlines nastiness of Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain. The series kicks off on July 10th, heading to the South Florida suburbs with Bully, Larry Clark’s sleazy, true-crime inspired tale of adolescent malaise and the cruelty that can exist between friends. Other highlights include erotic thrillers from Lawrence Kasdan, whose sultry, film noir-inspired Body Heat stars William Hurt and Kathleen Turner in her feature debut, and John McNaughton, whose Miami-set Wild Things remains the ultimate guilty pleasure film almost twenty years after release.
Other films screened include Romano Scavolini’s slasher psychodrama classic Nightmares in a Damaged Brain (pictured above), whose broad strokes of ridiculously goofy over-the-top gore and hilariously gratuitous nudity were deemed so offensive that the film’s distributor spent a year in jail! And if you’d rather watch a cross dressing hot head scream at hippies in between brutal murders, Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things is the Florida flick for you.
Each screening in the Florida Bad series will be accompanied by a special food and beverage menu crafted by Alamo Chef Ronnie New, featuring Florida favorites including fried alligator, frozen mojitos, and Cigar City beer from the Tampa based brewery. You might be in a movie theater, but you’re gonna need something stronger than sun block!
