Bandai Namco teams up with Arc System Works to unveil Dragonball FighterZ fighting game

Bandai Namco has dropped some of the first substantial gameplay footage of their brand new fighting game based on the popular Dragonball series, Dragonball FighterZ. And, boy, does it look fantastic. Moving away from the 3D fighting that have been a staple of the Budokai and Xenoverse titles, Dragonball Fighter Z switches the iconic fights to a 2.5D playing field (3D models fighting on a 2D plane). Never have I seen a fight between Goku and Freiza replicated so well in video game form.

The title is being developed by Arc System Works, the renowned studio behind extravagant fighters like Guilty Gear, Blazblue, and Persona Arena. They’re bringing their signature over-the-top fighting game visual experience of Guilty Gear Xrd (also a 2.5 fighting game) to recreate the sense of frantic and fast action of the Dragonball anime. The rock and roll soundtrack sounds like something out of Guilty Gear, but I hope tunes from the show will be used.

While there is no word on a final roster, based on the gameplay, six of the characters have been revealed:

  • Goku
  • Vegeta
  • Gohan
  • Perfect Cell
  • Freiza
  • Majin Buu

From the energy blasts to the vanishing sound effects, Dragonball FighterZ certainly seems to have a lot of love and care put into the game to replicate the anime. There are hints of mechanics that ArcSys seem is be bringing in with other games. Players can select three fighters each to battle it out with the ability to call in assist attacks much like those found in the Marvel vs Capcom series. Another cool feature showcased were the environments being destroyed as Goku reflected Ki Blasts away and I foresee a lot more information on the mechanics of the game revealed as people get their impression from E3.

Dragonball FighterZ is currently in development for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC and is expected to launch Early 2018.
