Syfy gives series order to Krypton and Happy!, developing George R.R. Martin series

Syfy has announced two series orders for the cable channel, with two comic book-based shows, Krypton and Happy!, getting full season pick ups.

The Krypton series will follow Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos. The Seg-El name is both a nod to Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and a reference to John Byrne’s 1980s miniseries, “The World of Krypton.” Cameron Cuffe is set to play Seg-El along with Georgina Campbell as Lyta Zod. Krypton will be executive produced by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight trilogy) through his Phantom Four banner. The pilot teleplay and story is written by David S. Goyer & Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Krypton will be produced by Warner Horizon Television and is based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, published by DC Comics.

Happy! stars Christopher Meloni (Wet Hot American Summer, Man of Steel) as Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hit-man, adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex, eczema and betrayal. With a hit gone wrong, a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail, and a monstrous child killer in a Santa suit on the loose, Nick and his world will be changed forever this Christmas. By a tiny blue horse called Happy. Based on the Image Comics miniseries by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson, the series is executive produced by Morrison himself and Crank’s Brian Taylor. Patrick Macmanus will serve as showrunner.

In addition, Syfy is gearing up to get into the George R.R. Martin business with an adaptation of his 1980 novella Nightflyers. Previously adapted into a feature film, Nightflyers is set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction, a crew of explorers journey on the most advanced ship in the galaxy, The Nightflyer, to intercept a mysterious alien spacecraft that might hold the key to their survival. As the crew nears their destination, they discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence and never-seen captain may be steering them into deadly and unspeakable horrors deep in the dark reaches of space. Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train, Jacob’s Ladder remake) will write and executive produce the series. Martin has no involvement in the development in the series.
