Resident Evil movie franchise to get reboot

Resident Evil
Considering how popular the Resident Evil video game franchise was at the time, it’s no surprise that a movie adaptation was made in 2002. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to see a small group trying to survive a zombie apocalypse on the big screen? Sure, it was done in the George Romero films, but these movies had the added allure of a video game coming to life. Most fans probably thought the film would be successful. But few people could’ve expected in to turn into a 6-movie franchise. Well, it did with film releases every two to four years since the first one came out.

Now, so shortly after the end of that franchise, plans for a reboot series are already in motion. Martin Moszkowicz, chairman of the board at Constantin Film, confirmed to Variety at the Cannes Film Festival that a reboot is in development at the giant German production company, which owns rights to the franchise and has produced all of its installments.

This year’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was supposed to be the final movie in the franchise. (It grossed $312 million.) But apparently, the people in charge want the show to go on. This could be because of the very impressive $160 million the movie raked in from China alone.

Will Paul W.S. Anderson Return?

Currently, there are no details regarding the reboot’s director, actors or how the project will fit into the franchise as a whole. Paul W.S. Anderson wrote all six installments and directed four. But his involvement is up in the air, partly due to his Monster Hunter movie. This film is inspired by another Capcom video game and is scheduled for release in late 2017 or early 2018.

The Resident Evil movie franchise has earned $1.2 billion worldwide to date. This makes it Europe’s most successful independent horror-genre movie franchise in history and the highest-grossing film series to be based on a video game.

The original video game, upon which the movies are based, follows an elite task force known as S.T.A.R.S. as its members try to survive a zombie-infested mansion during an investigation of their teammates’ disappearance. Much of the original film and the sequels stray from the video games. Perhaps the reboot series will follow the games much more closely.
