No one can deny the live-action Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson ended up a rousing success. The film has grossed $1.14 billion worldwide at the box office. Will there be a sequel though? Watson hopes so.
“I would love to do a sequel,” she told Access Hollywood (via MTV). “I always thought that Belle would become a teacher and she would run the library in the castle and open it up to the village. This was where I was going.”
Disney’s Sean Bailey seemed to put a nix on the idea.
Mike Fleming Jr wrote on Deadline after interviewing Bailey, “There are currently no plans for a sequel and the studio — perhaps with Alice Through The Looking Glass as a reminder — won’t try to force one. It will explore possible spinoff and prequel scenarios.”
Fair enough. A company can only draw from the same well so many times before it runs dry. But Watson’s willingness to work on another Beauty and the Beast should not be ignored either considering her fans.
Bailey told Fleming Jr, “The first teaser trailer was viewed by more than 90 million, and almost half of them came from one of Emma’s vast social media channels. Imagine, 40 million plus views through her social media channels.”
Not all of Watson’s movies are mega hits, but that kind of influence can help
The original 1991 Beauty and the Beast spawned two sequels. One of them, titled The Enchanted Christmas, released in 1997 as a shorter 71-minute movie and kept most of the same cast. The second follow-up Belle’s Magical World came out in 1998 and was comprised of smaller episodes intended to become an animated series.
This year’s live-action Beauty and the Beast followed along the lines of the original animated movie. But it also featured a few additions and other small changes, some controversial. Protests stirred over arguably “pro-gay” scenes.
It’s not certain whether a proper Beauty and the Beast sequel is happening (and it looks unlikely). However, Disney is not slowing down with the live-action remake of their classic movies. In the next few years, expect to see live-action versions of The Lion King, Aladdin, Dumbo, The Little Mermaid and more.
