Last week Nintendo officially kicked off the Splatoon U.S. Inkling Open Tournament on the Wii U. The top two teams will compete on April 29th where the first place team is set to win tickets to this year’s E3.
Splatoon 2 is set to release on July 21st for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo has shifted its approach, and rather than the traditional press conferences we see from Sony and Microsoft, it has something pretty interesting in mind with a Splatoon 2 exhibition tournament. It follows the trend that we’ve seen from Nintendo. In the past few years, it has held the Super Smash Bros Invitational back starting in 2014 and the return of the Nintendo World Championships in 2015. Both have allowed fans who weren’t even attending E3 to join the festivities.
With the Nintendo Switch out now, it’s time for Nintendo to really show off what the system can do. Two big names we know that are coming are Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey. Splatoon 2 being a big focal point of E3 is a great move, especially since the game was so well received and still played by fans. More details are yet to be announced which was revealed on the Nintendo of America Twitter account.

Splatoon is a third-person shooter where the objective is to control and cover as much of the map. And you’ll need help by using ink and a variety of weapons. It centers around creatures known as Inklings, which can transform between a humanoid and squid forms. The game features both a single-player campaign and a 4-on-4 online multiplayer.
We more than likely will see the winners of the U.S. Inkling Open Tournament part of the event. The rest will probably be a mixture of pro players and maybe a few influencers. One thing will be almost certain, plan to line up if Nintendo plans on renting out the Microsoft Center again for this event, especially if you don’t have tickets to E3.
