A new console will always give gamers a reason to be excited again. The Nintendo Switch has proved that after its first month of launch. Released on March 3rd, the Nintendo Switch has sold approximately 2.4 million units worldwide, making it Nintendo’s fastest-selling system according to TIME. The record for fastest-selling console overall goes to the PS4 which boasted 4 million units sold in its first month. But considering Nintendo released the Switch in March – a time where, unlike the holiday season, few people are looking to buy new gaming hardware – this is rather impressive.
Joost Van Dreunen, the CEO of the SuperData Research, Inc. who crunched these sales numbers up, had this to say:
“Nintendo is performing above expectations, which suggests that, at least for now, it is well on its way to restore investor confidence. The current slate of upcoming titles is also looking strong, and we expect Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (late April) and Splatoon 2 (July) to do well over the summer period.”
Not a Surprise
Consoles tend to do some of their absolute best during their launch period. This is when anticipation is at the absolute maximum and more people are looking to buy. So it really isn’t too surprising that the Nintendo Switch has done so well in its first month. With games like the aforementioned Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (a money-printing franchise) and Splatoon 2 on the horizon, plus various third-party and indie titles, it looks like the Switch could very well keep a steady momentum of sales going.
