Before this, I was rocking a 2014 Razer Blackwidow Ultimate that a friend gave me about a year ago. It was better than my wireless Logitech keyboard that I got when I first built my PC. But I didn’t like how loud the keys were and how dusty it was. (It’s not Razer’s fault obviously. My friend and I just never bothered to clean it). The G413 is much smaller when comparing to the Blackwidow. Even two weeks after receiving it, I’m still trying to get used to the more compact size it boasts. The size kind of works for me in a way, seeing as I’m using a small wooden desk that’s been in my family’s household since the late ’90s. (My Blackwidow took up a bit of space as it is.)
The G413 uses a Romer-G mechanical switch that operates at a distance of 1.5 mm. This is approximately 25% shorter and faster than its competitors. Logitech also claims that the switch response time, on average, is up to 10ms faster than Razer Blackwidow V2 keyboards. To be honest, I couldn’t tell a huge difference in response time. (I was playing games like DOOM and CS:GO, where reaction time is the name of the game.) This could, however, be due to the fact that it’s just hard for me to notice this kind of thing when I’m under consistent pressure to not die by the hands of demons and/or counter-terrorists.
I can say though that the Logitech G413 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard still works well for gaming. It’s even better when you install the optional performance keycaps (pictured above). It has a superior grip which helps for many games. Also below the keyboard is a cable pathway (see below), convenient if you want to use your gaming headset via the USB slot on the top right-hand side. I used it for my headset and the cable fit in perfectly.
My main problem with the G413 is when I type. It’s nothing too serious, but the way the stands angle the keyboard make it easy for the side of my right hand to push other keys. Sometimes I accidentally delete entire words by pressing a button I didn’t even know could do that. I’m probably getting used to it, however, seeing as typing this review was a breeze.
Final Reaction
For $89.99, the Logitech G413 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is perfect for those just starting out with PC gaming. I suggest those looking for an upgrade from their standard keyboard to test it out. Although, if you already own a gaming keyboard that is giving you no problems at all, it might be best to just stick with your current one or buy one with more features. The G413 is aimed at the prosumer market and it definitely feels like a prosumer product. Maybe I will clean off that Blackwidow Ultimate and see if I like it again, but for now, I’ll be sticking to the G413 to see if it grows on me even more.
