Has The Big Bang Theory spinoff has found its young Sheldon Cooper?
The Big Bang Theory spinoff may have found its young Sheldon Cooper, according to Variety. The show is reportedly called Sheldon, and will center on the childhood of the character made famous by the Emmy Award-winning actor Jim Parsons. According to the site, young Sheldon will be played by Iain Armitage who plays Ziggy Chapman in the HBO series Big Little Lies. Armitage has also appeared in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Parsons will serve as an executive producer for the show, which has yet to get a formal pilot order. Though Sheldon’s father has yet to be cast, it’s reported that Zoe Perry (The Family) will play Sheldon’s mother Mary Cooper. Perry is the real-life daughter of Laurie Metcalf (Toy Story 3, Rosanne) who plays Sheldon’s mother on The Big Bang Theory. Metcalf has been nominated for an Emmy Award for her role on the show. The Big Bang Theory often has Sheldon recalling things he’d done as a young man in the house with his twin sister, his religious mother and hard-drinking father, often causing destruction in the neighborhood with his experiments. If the show goes to series, it would be likely that we’ll see Sheldon get a mental evaluation. As Sheldom says, “I’m not crazy. My mother had me tested.” We would also likely meet a younger version of Sheldon’s beloved Meemaw, played in the main show by Academy Award nominee June Squibb. Armitage has also been seen on the Steve Harvey competition Little Big Shots and is known for doing short video reviews of Broadway shows. The Big Bang Theory is currently in negotiations for a two-year renewal. The Big Bang Theory showrunner Steve Molaro has written the script for the pilot.
