Later this month we will see Scarlett Johansson take on the role of Major “Makoto” Kusanagi in the Hollywood live-action adaption of Ghost in the Shell. Over in Japan, however, the film will be getting a Japanese language dub which will cast the original Japanese voice actors from the Ghost in the Shell animated films and series.
Japanese website Natalie reports that Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Otsuka, and Koichi Yamadera will be returning to voice their respective characters in the film. All three voice actors have been with the Ghost in the Shell franchise since the release of the first animated film back in 1995 and would later return to reprise their roles of Major Kusanagi and Batou in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002), 2nd Gig (2004) and the second animated film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004).
Mamoru Oshii, the director both Ghost in the Shell animated films mentioned that it has been awhile since all three voice actors have taken on the roles of their characters. “I want them to deliver performances they see fit. They are all pros, so there’s nothing to worry about.”
In a way it makes it seem a bit more exciting to watch the movie in Japanese now. Especially with the rumors that the Major’s name in the film may have been changed to “Mira.”
Ghost in the Shell arrives in theaters on March 31st.
