In a recent interview with the BBC, Pearl Mackie revealed her character Bill Potts will be openly gay.
“Yeah, Bill’s gay. It shouldn’t be a big deal in the 21st Century. It’s about time isn’t it?” said Mackie. “That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show.”
Doctor Who has featured gay and bisexual characters before. Captain Jack Harkness was the first openly bisexual (and pansexual) character on Doctor Who. Vastra and Jenny, who are a happily married couple, were recurring characters. But, Bill will mark the first time a main companion is openly gay.
It will be mentioned in the first episode.
Mackie expressed the importance of this. “It’s important to say people are gay, people are black – there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them.”
Although Bill may be gay, Mackie wants you to know that isn’t something that defines the character. Mackie said, “[Being gay] is not the main thing that defines her character – it’s something that’s part of her and something that she’s very happy and very comfortable with.”
Doctor Who returns on April 15th on BBC America.
