Logan arrives in theaters this Friday, making it the last time Hugh Hackman will be playing Wolverine. Jackman isn’t the only one saying goodbye to the X-Men franchise.
Patrick Stewart has been playing the role of the X-Men mentor Charles Xavier on the big screen since 2000. He has previously mentioned that he wasn’t done with the role of Professor X just yet, but after watching Logan recently with Logan director and co-writer James Mangold and Jackman, he confirmed that it will be his last appearance in the franchise because it was just that damn good.
The announcement was made on SiriusXM Town Hall where he appeared with Mangold and Jackman and explained why he made the decision:
“A week ago, Friday night in Berlin, the three of us sat watching the movie, and I was so moved by it, much more moved than I had been the first time of seeing it.” He added that towards the end of the screening, Jackman reached over and took his hand as both actors wiped away a tear….”we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Jackman] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’”
It’s sad to see Patrick Stewart leave such an iconic role that he has made so enjoyable, but it’s better to go out on top, and according to him, this is the perfect send off to such an important character in such an iconic franchise.
