The Mishima feud has fueled the brawls in the Tekken franchise for over 20 years, and it is finally coming to a close with Tekken 7. This time around they are strongly focusing on its story by utilizing over-the-top cinematic sequences that blend into battle with a Hollywood-like style.
The game is at its graphical best ever to date, with the 7th iteration powered by the Unreal Engine 4. The roster will feature many fan favorites, several newcomers, and over 30 playable characters to choose from including Akuma of Street Fighter fame. The story won’t be Tekken 7’s only innovation as they are introducing new mechanics such as Rage Arts, Rage Drives, and Power Crushes to make the game accessible to veterans and newcomers alike.
During my hands-on time with Tekken, the bounce mechanics on both walls and the ground are stronger than ever before, making them great for combos. The Rage Arts/Drives are devastatingly powerful, but they are only available after enough damage has been taken in order to prevent them from being abused.
This won’t be the last we see of Tekken, but it will be the last time the Kazuya and Heihachi family feud will take center stage (for a while at least). This can either be a good or bad thing, as their family drama has been the focal point for so long. It will be interesting to see where the developers take the story next. Overall I enjoyed my time with Tekken 7 and am excited to see the conclusion for the Mishima clan feud and learn the ins and outs of the new battle system.
Tekken 7 is scheduled for release June 2, 2017, for PS4, Xbox One, and Steam.
