J.J. Abrams says he’s done with reboots and remakes

J.J. Abrams right now is literally a juggernaut in the TV and film industry. When his name becomes attached to a project, it’s almost like gold. I myself am a huge fan of his as well. I mean, who can go wrong when you have movies like Cloverfield, Armageddon, Mission Impossible (3, Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation), Super 8, Star Trek (rebooted films) and of course the granddaddy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Obviously this isn’t all his films, as well, it’s a culmination of writing, producing and directing.

I haven’t even mentioned any of his TV conquests that include Alias, Lost, Fringe, Person of Interest and Westworld. The list literally goes on. With so much success, we’re all wondering what’s next for Abrams. At the Golden Globes recently, People Magazine asked him what the future holds, and here’s what he had to say:

“You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid. In fact, even Westworld, which we’re here for tonight, is one of them. But I don’t feel any desire to do that again. I feel like I’ve done enough of that that I’m more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot.”

“You know, I do think that if you’re telling a story that is not moving anything forward, not introducing anything that’s relevant, that’s not creating a new mythology or an extension of it, then a complete remake of something feels like a mistake. But film is a fairly young medium and there are stories that have lasted for centuries. And it’s not uncommon, I think, for stories to be retold — whether it’s at campfire or on film, but I think you always have to be additive. You can’t just be remaking something just for the sake of remaking it.”

Surprisingly enough, I completely agree with his sentiments and don’t blame him for not wanting to do reboots or remakes again. For a while now, there’s been this recycling and regurgitating of the same thing over and over. Creativity in Hollywood feels like it’s become a bit stagnant. I think if there’s anyone that can break that cycle, and help breathe new life in the creative sector, it’s Abrams. He’s beyond talented and has the resources to do it. Now the only thing we can do is wait and see what he comes up with.
