Don’t wait for new Harry Potter movies (but expect them)

By Reinier Macatangay

A few days ago, Harry Potter fans were disappointed to read that creator J.K. Rowling denied plans for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to hit movie theaters in 2026. Considering most of the original actors have moved on, the situation looks even bleaker for those hoping to see Harry, Hermoine and Ron together in further adventures.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played The Chosen One (Harry), offered little enthusiasm for the idea back in September.

“At the moment it’s not even a concern because I’m too young to play the character, but even in 10 years’ time, I would still feel strange about going back to it.,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m never going to close that door, but I think I’ll be happy enough and secure enough to let someone else play it.”

Ouch.

Meanwhile, former co-star Emma Watson is busy with the upcoming release of a live-action Beauty and the Beast for Disney. Watson, considered one of the most beautiful women in the world even by non-Harry Potter fans, will likely sustain a long and successful career without Harry Potter. She does not need to return to the franchise.

The third part of the trio Rupert Grint is carving out his own career in television with roles in Sick Note and Snatch.

Even actors who played minor roles are expressing Harry Potter fatigue. Evanna Lynch, who portrayed the quirky Luna Lovegood, stated on Instagram she may give up related conventions for a while.

“Sometimes life gives you an easy route that dulls your appetite for chasing your dreams and you become inhibited by fear of what lays beyond comfort and safety,” she wrote in a lengthy post.

But, there is hope for a revival.

Remember how many times Star Wars creator George Lucas denied he would make Episode VII? Well, according to Cinema Blend and other sources, it turns out he already began the foundation for Episode VII before Disney bought the franchise. Just because Rowling says no at the moment, does not mean no forever.

In addition, while it is true actors become sick of the roles that made them famous, a lot of them do come back.

To use Star Wars as an example again, Harrison Ford never seemed to enjoy discussing Star Wars after finishing work on the original trilogy. In fact, he called character Han Solo “dumb” more than once.

Then he came back in a starring role last year in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Granted, his character was subsequently killed off, but the ritual of returning to that breakout role is becoming a trend both in movies and television. For example, look at Fuller House and Gilmore Girls on Netflix.

The opportunity to return to a beloved character would be too lucrative, and fans will never forget the role that vaulted them into stardom either. It would almost be an obligation to return to Harry Potter. If 2026 rolls around and talks of another Harry Potter arise, there will be tremendous pressure on the original actors to make it work.

All of this means, count on new Harry Potter films becoming made eventually. Just, do not wait for them, because it will be a long wait.
