Become the Last Castoff in Torment: Tides of Numenera

A billion years have passed and countless species, civilizations, technologies, cultures and everything else you can think of have faded away. All that is left are remnants of the past. Set in this futuristic science-fantasy world is a pen and paper-stylized RPG, where players will be encounter thousands of choices, each with their own set of consequences or rewards. You take the role of the Last Castoff, the final discarded body of an ancient being known as the Changing God, who at the end of each of his life transfers his consciousness into a new body to continue living.

An ancient creature called the Sorrow has incalculable power and is searching for and killing off all of the Changing Gods castoffs. While fleeing for your life, you jump into a portal and end up inside of a living creature called The Bloom. It has these mouths called maws that function as portals between multiple worlds and other dimensions.

During my time with the game, it felt in-depth in regards to the story and conversations between your party members and the NPCs. While traversing the strange environment called the Bloom, I came across multiple side-quest opportunities, each of which turned out to be more detailed than I expected. More often than not, combat would end up being the last resort as I was usually able to persuade, deceive or intimidate most NPCs to get the result I wanted. Like most RPGs, when you attempt these conversational options, there will be times when you fail; however, unlike other games, Torment will allow you to reattempt these challenges if you have the proper resources available. In many RPGs, this would often cost your party experience or items, but this is not the case in Torment, as you are always rewarded with experience. Depending on the situation, you will occasionally receive items as well.

The game will feature multiple endings based on character choice, and there are even a few choices where your character may end up dying with the need to regenerate, or worse, they may end in an actual early permanent game over.

Based on the few hours I was able to plunge into Torment, it will definitely be one of those games where the more time you invest, the further and further down the rabbit hole you will want to go.

Check out our video below to see it in action.

Torment: Tides of Numenerra is scheduled for release February 28, 2017, on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
