Beam up three new cast members to Star Trek: Discovery. The new series announced the addition of Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, and Mary Chieffo to the cast as members of the Klingon race. Obi will be playing T’Kuvma, the ruler of the Klingon empire, Latif will play Kol, a Klingon commanding officer, and Chieffo will play L’Rell, the battle deck commander of their ship. This announcement helps to round out a cast that is still in search of a lead, although CBS has stated that the main character will be a female.
The Star Trek franchise has seen renewed interest since the popular film reboot directed by JJ Abrams and starring Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk. Star Trek Discovery will premiere on CBS in May 2017, and continue on the digital streaming service CBS All Access. This will mark the first series in the Star Trek universe in over a decade since the cult favorite Enterprise left the air in 2005. However, the show has hit some snags along the way. It was already delayed from its initial February premiere date to May and showrunner Bryan Fuller announced in October that he was stepping away from the series. Here’s hoping that creative speedbumps aside, the show will be a welcome addition to the Star Trek oeuvre.
